Dozens of protesters shut down one of Australia’s most polluted intersections on Tuesday in a fight against a flagged increase in traffic connected with the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel Project.
Maribyrnong Truck Action Group organised the morning peak hour protest on the corner of Francis Street and Williamstown Road in Yarraville over concerns that Williamstown Road is expected to experience a doubling of truck traffic to 5000 trucks every day by 2030.
MTAG president Samantha McArthur said hospital admission rates for children with respiratory ailments in the City of Maribyrnong are among the highest in Victoria.
“The West Gate Tunnel Project is being sold to us as a solution, but unless there are improvements on all residential streets, this $6.7 billion project will be a big fail,” she said.
