Two arrested after more than two tonnes of tobacco seized in Altona North

Police seized more than two tonnes of illicit tobacco and cigarettes during a search warrant in Altona North last week.

Police were called to reports of a burglary at a business on Borrack Square about 4am on Thursday, January 18.

It is understood offenders forced entry into a warehouse and stole tobacco products.

They fled the scene in a vehicle.

Detectives later executed a search warrant at the premises.

They allegedly uncovered 2,159 kilograms of illicit tobacco, as well as 341,000 loose cigarettes, 75,000 cigarette packages and 160 vapes.

A 43-year-old Altona man and a 48-year-old Point Cook man were interviewed in relation to the alleged sale of illegal tobacco.

They’ve both been released pending further inquiries.

The investigation into the burglary remains ongoing.
