Two women injured by same ‘trip hazard’

One woman broke her arm and another dislocated her shoulder after tripping in the same hole at an Altona North building site.

Resident Geoff Mitchelmore demanded that Hobsons Bay council act after his wife broke her arm when she tripped in a hole in the footpath caused by building work on the corner of McArthurs Road and Duke Street.

“The site is an absolute disgrace,” he said. “The fencing around it is on the footpath and the legs protrude onto the concrete. They’re a trip hazard,” Mr Mitchelmore said.

“The concrete is all broken. There are holes in it for people to put their feet in and there’s dirt and rubbish all over the concrete. The place is an absolute mess and a danger for people to walk on.”

Mr Mitchelmore said that after his wife’s injury, a neighbour dislocated her shoulder after tripping in the same hole.

Hobsons Bay’s chief executive Chris Eddy said the council was aware of only one incident relating to one individual.

“Council contacted the builder at this location as soon as we were made aware of any possible safety concerns,” he said.

“On inspection, council was satisfied potential issues on the site had been addressed. Council’s contractor has also undertaken very minor asphalt repair works to the footpath near the construction site.”

The builder, Orion Homes, declined to comment.
