The state’s planning tribunal has refused to allow a three-storey apartment building next door to a live music venue at Williamstown.
Mazark and Associates applied to build five dwellings with a five-car stacker at the rear of the heritage-listed Williamstown Advertiser building at 205 Nelson Place.
Hobsons Bay councillors defied their officers’ recommendation, refusing to grant a permit, stating it was an over development, there would be noise and odour issues for future residents, and waste collection arrangements and visitor parking were unacceptable.
Several neighbours, including the Yacht Club Hotel, objected to the plan.
The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled there were too many unresolved issues to allow it to proceed.
VCAT member Alison Glynn said a key concern was the noise impact on future residents from live music at the Yacht Club Hotel, which is licensed until 1am most days.
“Relying just on attenuated glass places heavy reliance on keeping windows and doors of the main living spaces closed,” Ms Glynn said.
She said the future residents would also be affected by the hotel’s kitchen.
Ms Glynn also agreed the proposal could affect future development of the Yacht Club Hotel, and could leave residents facing a blank wall.
