Victoria University’s latest intake includes students giving a whole new meaning to a double degree.
Twins Mia and Ava Duggan-Sorbara have both enrolled in a bachelor of music, while Melanie and Jessica Kirjakovski are both undertaking a bachelor of biomedicine on the pathway to becoming doctors.
Mia said she and her sister are no strangers to performing together, a partnership that stretches back to combining their voices in song at their grandmother’s funeral when they were aged 13.
“Nonna always loved hearing us sing and it was really her who launched our singing as a profession,” she said.
The talented twins have added to their singing skills by teaching themselves to play guitar and piano. The pair also write their own pop-folk music, performing at cafes and bars as well as weddings and funerals.
Melanie and Jessica Kirjakovski both have their sights set on working in the medical field, ideally as doctors.
Melanie said the pair has always enjoyed the same hobbies and interests and bond over a shared love of drawing, horses and music.
“It’s great to have a sister who is also a best friend,” she said.
