A state government cash splash will bring “world-class” soccer facilities, including Australia’s premier training academy, to Footscray and Maribyrnong.
A $10 million grant will help develop Footscray Park and Robert Barrett Reserve with new training and playing facilities for Melbourne Victory’s W-League and Academy squads. The state government has also allocated $2.1 million towards a new oval at Bayside College’s Newport campus and extending a pavilion at the school’s Williamstown campus.
Melbourne Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro said the investments would help shape the careers of future Matildas and Socceroos.
“Football participation levels have never been higher, so this facility is going to have an incredibly positive impact on the community,” he said.
The money will help fund three flood-lit pitches at Footscray Park, six changerooms, undercover viewing areas and administration and education areas for coaches, staff and players.
Two new training pitches will be created at Robert Barrett Reserve to support the Victory’s expanding women’s and youth programs.
Sport Minister John Eren said the state government was aware more needed to be done to support women and girls in professional sport.
“We are levelling the playing field for women’s sport – upgrading changerooms, grounds and elite facilities across Victoria,” he said.
Clubs to benefit from the Bayside College investments include Williamstown Football Club, Williamstown Cricket Club, Williamstown CYMS Football Club, Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club and Williamstown Junior Football Club.
Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the funding would improve facilities, particularly for women and girls.
“We will have the most elite players and very young first-timers using the very best facilities,” he said.
