Melbourne Victory’s new $18 million soccer academy is closer to kicking off after being included in Maribyrnong council’s updated Footscray Park master plan.
The champion A-League club last year revealed plans for new training and development facilities in the western half of Footscray Park and Robert Barrett Reserve near Highpoint.
The Footscray Park component includes three new floodlit pitches, including a show pitch, six unisex changerooms, warm-up facilities and undercover seating for 600 spectators.
Maribyrnong councillors last week voted to endorse the updated Footscray Park Masterplan for community consultation.
The existing plan was developed in 2011 after the 15-hectare park was found to be highly valued but underused due to poor access and a lack of quality facilities.
The master plan has guided works across the park including new parking, a playground and tree planting.
A council report stated the updated master plan “unlocks the site’s potential” and will strengthen the local sporting landscape.
Melbourne Victory is seeking a 21-year lease for the academy site.
The revised master plan also includes increased landscaping, new walking paths and free public wi-fi. Consultation will take place this month.
