Police are using trail bike patrols to try to catch two illegal riders who tried to run over a walker at Altona Meadows.

Sergeant Stephen Bosnar said the riders had been seen around the Truganina Park area, off Queen Street in Altona Meadows.

A walker managed to take a photo of two riders before jumping out of the way.

“They shouldn’t be in that area to start with – it’s controlled by City West Water and the gates are all locked all the way around it, but it’s used by a lot of bird watchers and walkers, in particular,” Sergeant Bosnar said.

“One of the walkers has taken a photo of them, which has antagonised them and then they’ve gone straight at him.”

The riders, believed to be in their 30s, were last seen in AB Shaw Reserve off Hall Avenue at Altona Meadows.

Police believe they live locally.

“Their actions are becoming more and more menacing,” Sergeant Bosnar said.

“Westgate Highway Patrol are patrolling the area on trail bikes, and local police are also aware of the issues.

“Penalties for riding in this area are as though they are riding on the road.

“They are still required to be licenced, and the bikes are required to be registered and in a roadworthy condition.

“Trail bikes are only permitted to be used on designated roads.”

Police are advising walkers to be mindful when using the area, and to stay away from the riders.

Anyone who sees the riders is advised to call triple-0.

Anyone with information is urged to call Sergeant Bosnar at Laverton police station on 9369 2122.
