People are invited to join in Hobsons Bay’s first ever pride walk and ‘Marching Together’ exhibition at Altona as part of GOWEST Midsumma Festival events.
GOWEST is a coalition of western suburbs councils hosting events for Midsumma, Victoria’s annual GLBTIQ cultural festival.
Joel Gallery director Adrian Masterman-Smith is running workshops in preparation for the ‘Walk with Pride’ and exhibition to be launched there on February 3.
The walk, starting at 6.15pm, will be the opening event for the exhibition, with people gathering at the Louis Joel centre before crossing the road and walking around Logan Reserve to form a ‘Living Sculpture of Inclusion’.
Mr Masterman-Smith said being part of a pride march was emotional, recalling the 2012 event at St Kilda when Hobsons Bay’s then-mayor Tony Briffa lead the west holding the GOWEST banner.
People’s drawings, photos and artworks from the workshops will become the exhibition.
Work from the exhibition will also be published in a commemorative exhibition catalogue. Centre manager Kim Reilly said everyone was invited to attend.
“It’s about inclusion and acceptance,” she said.
“Take sexuality out, take race out, take religion out, we’re all human beings. We’re all going to walk with pride.”
