A West Footscray business owner is hoping to make a positive impact on the environment while delivering the best for her customers.

Reem Sweid owns the Chestnut Tree bookshop and cafe on Barkly Street, and plants one tree for every book sold – with the running total currently at 375.

Ms Sweid said she wanted to offer an environmentally conscious alternative to the mainstream book options.

“People like physical books, and want to read, I wanted to facilitate that, but to go against the trend of e-books,” Ms Sweid said.

“It’s kind of like giving back to nature because books come from trees.

“We’re able to return something back to the forest.”

Ms Sweid said that while people may often go for discounted books online, she offers her books at the recommended retail price, and takes the price difference to pay for the tree plantings.

“I can’t compete on price, but I can compete on ethics,” Ms Sweid said.

“I’ve had feedback from customers that they’re delighted about the environmental aspect, and having a sustainable book option.”

Ms Sweid opened the Chestnut Tree’s physical store less than a fortnight ago, and has been completing click and collect orders, as well as selling takeaway coffees.

Ms Sweid said while lockdown hasn’t slowed the business down too much, she was looking forward to having the community allowed into her new store for “proper browsing”.

“I want my store to be a community space for people,” she said.

“I’m hoping after lockdown to have kids storytimes, with mums drinking coffee, and a mothers group as well.

“It’s been a difficult year for everyone. I’m so happy to provide something positive.”
