Wedding hoons terrorise West Footscray residents

Police are continuing to investigate claims that wedding party hoons “terrorised” West Footscray and Yarraville streets.

Videos of the scene posted on Facebook show motorcycles and luxury sports cars performing lengthy burnouts in Ormond Street, West Footscray, before an “honour guard”.

They then show what is believed to be Altona groom Antonio Sawan’s Maserati carry out further burnouts outside St Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Christian church on Yarraville’s Somerville Road.

A witness, who asked not to be named, told Fairfax Media the “lawless scenes” on December 27 had “terrorised” the local community.

But wedding guest Kane Kovanović, who uploaded footage showing the motorcycles and cars smoking up the street as part of the celebrations, denied anyone was “terrorised”.

“We were celebrating a wedding. We weren’t hurting anyone. We didn’t have any intention to get anyone upset,” he told Fairfax Media.

Mr Kovanović posted a three-minute video of the scenes to Facebook with the caption: “A little taste of the wedding yesterday!!”

The video shows a motorcyclist speeding along a footpath, as well as palls of smoke as at least two motorcyclists and the driver of a black Mercedes spin their tyres on the suburban streets.

Another video of a driver “frying tyres in front of the church” was posted with the hashtag #sickday.

Mr Sawan posted comments including “Haha sick!!!” and “might need this for the video guy”.

The videos remain online and have so far attracted almost 4000 views.

Friends have supported the actions and hit out at complaints as “ridiculous and pathetic”.

“Most people only get married once and can’t even celebrate there [sic] special day the way they want anymore,” one commented on Facebook.

“Residents were scared?

“What a joke clearly you could see there’s nothing to be worried about it’s a wedding for god sake.”

Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said the investigation was ongoing.
