Melbourne will get its first new CBD bypass in 25 years next month when the new Wurundjeri Way extension opens as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.
The new extension linking Dynon Road at West Melbourne to Wurundjeri Way at Docklands, will open to traffic on Monday, October 27, reducing the number of cars needing to rely on Spencer and King streets before the rest of the tunnel project opens at the end of the year.
The state government said the Wurundjeri Way extension will have the capacity to carry more than 10,000 vehicles a day on opening, increasing to around 15,000 when the tunnels and elevated Footscray Road open – improving connections across Melbourne’s inner west and giving motorists another way to travel to the CBD, South Melbourne and Docklands, including events at Marvel Stadium.
“Next month we’ll see the Wurundjeri Way extension give more options to motorists travelling across Melbourne’s west and the city,” said Roads and Road Safety Minister and Williamstown MP Melissa Horne in announcing the opening of the extension.
Footscray MP Katie Hall said motorists in her electorate and across the western suburbs would notice the difference once the extension opens.
“Melbourne’s newest CBD bypass will give thousands of drivers in Melbourne’s west more reliable and direct journeys, with less time in the car and more time doing the things they love,” Ms Hall said.
