Western Bulldogs Leadership Project diary

By Brandon Rogers

On April 20, I and the other Melton council group in the Leadership Project watched presentations from four different foundations that all represented their own specific community issue.

Djerriwarrh Health Services were the first foundation to present to us. The Djerriwarrh Health Services work with youth in the community to better their mental health.

The two representatives explained that their foundation believes that every child should have good “layers” around them, starting with family, school and community.

The next presentation was from a youth housing support worker. He helps put homeless people from the age of sixteen to twenty-five into housing.

Salvation Army Employment Plus was the third foundation to present to us.

This foundation helps students who decide that school isn’t appropriate for their needs to obtain work experience and gain employment.

They help pay for myki cards, clothes for interviews and other similar services.

The final presentation was by Ben O’Toole from Step Back Think, which is an organisation working to end social violence.

To raise awareness, orange laces are worn by sporting groups. I will be following this organisation and raising awareness avidly.

So, if you see a big bloke in the Melton/Footscray area wearing bright orange laces it’s probably me!

These presentations were to help us choose what issue we wanted to create a program for to raise awareness and to help the community. Personally, I will be choosing social violence.
