Western suburbs man avoids a bin but not a fine

The simple act of tossing a plastic drink bottle out a car window has cost a western suburbs man $861 in the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court.

A member of the public reported the Kensington man to EPA Victoria and volunteered to give evidence in court after they saw him throw out a chocolate milk container at a Moonee Ponds car wash.

EPA issued the man with a fine for unlawfully disposing of litter on 8 November 2021. He chose to have the matter dealt with in court, but then failed to appear.

The Magistrate fined him $500 without conviction and ordered him to pay $361 to cover EPA’s legal costs.

Members of the public can report litter and other pollution by calling EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 372 842 or providing details online at epa.vic.gov.au/report-pollution/reporting-pollution
