Western suburbs road sealing blitz begins

Early works are underway to seal and upgrade sections of Ross Road at Altona North, as part of a broader state government intiative to seal roads reduce dust pollution in Melbourne’s west.

The project includes new on-road parking bays which will benefit the local community and those who regularly use the Paisley Park soccer complex which is home to NPL club Altona Magic.

A new shared path will also be built, linking Blenheim Road and Mills Street, along with fencing between the road and rail line providing safer access to community and sporting facilities.

In Brooklyn North, work is in the final stages to seal the southern end of Old Geelong Road, including a turning area and new intersection to cater for a landfill facility.

Residents, bike riders and pedestrians using the nearby Federation Trail will also benefit from improved air quality as part of the road-sealing package.

New street lighting and landscaping work is also planned to improve recreation for trail-users.

In Yarraville, Francis Street from Whitehall Street to Spotswood Pier will undergo sealing works to create a smoother, safer road for the growing local community.

“Sealing these local roads is a direct action from listening to and prioritising community concerns to reduce airborne dust pollution and provide the improved amenity that our residents deserve,’’ said Williamstown MP and Ports and Freight Minister Melissa Horne

“These are significant actions to tackle the issues that matter to our community,” said Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Rayane Hawli in thanking Ms Horne for helping deliver the upgrades.

“Clean air is fundamental to our health and the wellbeing of all communities and the people of Hobsons Bay have the same right to clean air as those living in other parts of Melbourne,” Cr Hawli said.
