Boats at Williamstown have sunk as wild winds lash Melbourne.

It comes as a section of Altona pier broke off overnight on Wednesday.

Wind gusts of 96km/h were recorded over Port Phillip Bay overnight.

Altona photographer Russell Cassar captured the moment the boats sunk.

“I think this a bigger problem then just Altona pier,” he said.

“Piers are starting to show their age and lack of maintenance all over Hobsons Bay.

“The Ann Street pier in Williamstown collapsed, as well as others, over two years ago and is still waiting to be repaired.

“While the powers that be argue about who is responsible for repairs and where the money is coming from, we lose our history.

“Parks Victoria needs to make the jetties and piers around Hobsons Bay a priority.

“This is part of our history and once gone they can never be replaced.”
