A government school that received $500,000 towards its new theatre in the state budget has called for more money from Hobsons Bay council’s 2015-16 budget.
Williamstown High School representatives told last week’s council meeting it had a $350,000-$400,000 shortfall to complete the $2.5 million stage one of its centenary theatre.
In his budget submission, school council president Hugh Jones said: “Ratepayers would see this as a worthwhile investment in their children’s education and in those who follow. The school recognises all donors to our theatre, particularly those who have contributed inscribed pavers for $200 each and those who have ‘bought’ seats at $5000.
“Perhaps [council] could contribute five to 10 seats in the theatre? Maybe the entire front row of 20?
“This would be a powerful symbol of the partnership between the school and the city council.”
The theatre, officially known as the Performing Arts Centre of Excellence, will seat 300 people and include an art gallery and dance studio.
It will be hired out at commercial rates and also be used by students from Melbourne’s west undertaking university extension subjects.
Principal Gino Catalano told the council the theatre would be hired out for community use at a cheaper rate.
“Local community groups should have community rates, but other groups coming from outside the community may be charged a higher rate,” he said.
Builders are expected to be on site by October with the project completed towards the end of next year.
The school’s budget submission was one of 23 received. The council is considering all submissions ahead of adopting its final budget next Tuesday.
