Woman dies in Brooklyn house fire

An elderly woman has died in a house fire at Brooklyn overnight.

Firefighters were called to the Eames Avenue house about 1.40am on Thursday after numerous reports of smoke and flames billowing from a single storey duplex.

Fire Rescue Victoria crew arrived in six minutes to find the home engulfed in flames.

A Victorian Police spokeswoman said the body of an 81-year-old woman was found inside the house.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but early indications are that it was not suspicious.

It took more than 20 firefighters more than an hour to bring the fire under control.

Specialist fire investigators will examine the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
