Construction has started on the expansion of the Footscray Early Parenting Centre [EPC], with new designs unveiled for the multi-million dollar project.

Works would begin with the demolition of the existing administration building and the construction of 12 new residential family units.

The works would also include upgrades to the administration areas and new native landscaping.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) in partnership with Tweddle Child and Family Health Service and Bowden Corporation, the works have been slated for completion in late 2023.

Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said the upgraded centre would provide parents and carers with the advice and help they need, including extra care for babies with additional needs.

“This is another important step for the Early Parenting Centre program, which is set to triple the number of centres in the state by the end of 2024 – providing support to more than 5,000 additional families each year,” she said.

Footscray MP Katie Hall said the extension to the centre would provide more families access to longer residential stays, improving health, wellbeing and development outcomes for hundreds of families per year.

“It’s wonderful news that more families in Footscray will soon have greater access to the flexible and targeted support they need to ensure their children get the best start in life,” she said.

New designs have shown a new façade, a shared kitchen and dining space, a children’s play area and the residential family units, which have been designed to create an environment where families can feel safe and comfortable.

Local child and maternal health experts and Aboriginal groups have helped to develop the plans to ensure they would meet the needs of the local community.
