The long awaited upgrade of Wiliamstown’s historic Workshops Pier is a step closer, with a construction company contracted to deliver the project.

Ports and Freight Minister and Williamstown MP Melissa Horne last week announced Duratec had been appointed as the lead construction contractor for the pier upgrade following

a competitive tender process.

“Major works on Workshops Pier is set to begin early next year as part of our $46 million investment to rebuild and repair piers right across the state,” said Ms Horne in making the announcement.

“Workshops Pier has been a proud part of Williamstown’s maritime precinct for more than 80 years, and this upgrade will ensure it can continue to be enjoyed for decades more to come.”

Built in 1942, Workshops Pier is situated in the Seaworks precinct and is considered a local landmark on Williamstown’s historic waterfront.

Beginning in early 2025, the renovation works will start with the strengthening of the pier’s foundations so it can reopen for community and commercial use such as berthing for tall ships, emergency response vessels and acting as a welcoming spot for locals and visitors.

The reopening of the pier is part of the vision of the recently completed Williamstown local port area plan.

The upgrade of Workshops Pier is part of a state government program to repair and rebuild popular piers and jetties across the state, including at Warneet, Dromana and St Leonards.

Works on Workshops Pier are expected to be complete by 2026.
