The artistic talents of Hobsons Bay’s teenagers and young adults are now on show at Woods Street Arts Space in Laverton.
As part of the Woods Street Youth Art Prize, the biennial event is showcasing works by artists aged 14 to 25 who live, work, study or have a connection to Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley, Geelong or Melbourne.
The exhibition will be open at Woods Street Arts Space until Saturday, November 19, with the awards ceremony on Friday, November 18 at 6pm.
Showcasing the work of 43 artists, with half between 14 and 16 and the other half between 17 and 25, the exhibition features works across a range of mediums, including photography, painting, collage and animation.
Prizes will be awarded in five categories:
* Open category ($1000);
* Open category runner-up ($500);
* Hobsons Bay artist ($500);
* Artist encouragement award – under 20 ($200); and
* Artist encouragement award – over 20 ($200).
Hobsons Bay mayor Tony Briffa said the Woods Street Youth Art Prize aims to showcase the unique artistic skill within Hobsons Bay’s young population.
“This exhibition is a great celebration of the special place the Woods Street Arts Space holds in our community, and of the creativity and spirit of the young artists who live, work and study in Melbourne’s western region,” she said.
“The art prize is a fantastic way for young people to showcase their creative talents and to build their confidence to exhibit their work.
“It’s also a great chance for them to build their professional and creative networks.”
Voting for the People’s Choice Award closes at 5pm on Saturday, November 19, with the winner set to be announced on Friday, November 25.
