VAFA: CYMS title and promotion dreams smashed

Williamstown CYMS has fallen one stop short of its desired destination in Victorian Amateur Football Association division 1.

The CYs had their sights set on a grand final at a minimum after qualifying for the finals in second place.

But Mathew Montebello’s team bowed out in straight sets after a
shattering 11-point preliminary final loss to Ormond at Trevor Barker
Oval in Sandringham on Saturday. CYs missed out on their chance for
automatic promotion to the VAFA’s premier tier and will not get an opportunity to avenge their qualifying final loss at the hands of Hampton Rovers.

The CYs were always a long way back on the scoreboard against
Ormond but matched them in general play if volume of scoring is any
indication.

But the CYs kicked themselves out of the contest, converting just six times from 24 scoring shots.

Steven Barlow was their lone multiple goalkicker with two.

Ormond’s Matthew Robbins, who played 146 AFL games with Geelong
and the Western Bulldogs, proved the difference in the match with five
goals.

Ruckman Steven Puhar and tough-as-nails onballer Jason Bencich were the best for the CYs.
