Footscray was aiming for a quarter- time lead in its VFL clash with Bendigo Gold on Anzac Day. It just didn’t expect to enter the first break up by 51 points.
“We focused heavily on the start, as we had been blown out of the water in recent weeks,” said defender Jordan Russell.
The first quarter set the tone for the Dogs.
They kicked at least eight goals in every quarter in a convincing 166-point flogging, 33.16 (214) to 7.6 (48).
“We wanted to get off to a good start and then continue it through the game,” Russell said.
“In the past two rounds we have been playing well in patches. So to play the way we did was really good.”
Russell highlighted the spread of goalkickers as a real positive for the team.
Fourteen players got on the scoreboard with Jase Perkins kicking five goals.
“When you are that far ahead,
the boys can get goal hungry and want to kick everything themselves,” he said.
“But everyone was happy to use each other and find the person in the best spot.
“I think we have really missed him [Perkins] the last couple of weeks. It’s good for the team that he plays well and we don’t have to rely on the AFL-listed players for goals.
“We really had 23 contributors on the weekend.”
Clay Smith, in his return to the side, was best on ground.
This week the Bulldogs will face North Ballarat in Ballarat
