State league 2: Yarravill Glory hits back after slow start

Yarraville is flying up the ladder after recovering from a slow start to its state league 2 soccer season.

The Glory failed to secure a win in the first rounds but has roared back into contention in recent weeks.

Yarraville scored its first win in round four against Melbourne University (2-1) before going on to smash La Trobe University (5-0) and Geelong (3-0).

Club football manager Tony Polzella explained that losing key players on the eve of the season had made the early rounds tough.

“Before the first game we lost three strikers,” he said. “We had one guy who decided not to play any more; one was getting married and the other guy got injured in a pre-season game.

“Having said that, we dominated the game and missed several chances. We ended up drawing 0-0.

“The next game we were beaten by a better team.”

Even with the slow start, Yarraville has remained a defensive leader throughout the first seven rounds of the season. The Eagles have let through just five goals, the lowest of any state league 2 side.

It’s in attack that Polzella is hoping the Eagles can keep improving.

“I think we are number one in terms of stopping goals,” he said. “We just need to put the ball in the back of the net.

“Once we start doing that, I’m confident we will be right up there come midway or three-quarters of the way through the season.”

Yarraville is preparing for a crucial fortnight.

Sitting in fourth, the Eagles will take on ninth-placed Hume City this week before a match against competition front-runner Moreland United.

Polzella said the club’s aim for the season hadn’t changed.

“We want to get promoted – that’s what we are aiming for,” he said.
