WRFL: In-form Altona Vikings’ finals dream lives on

Altona has come from the clouds to make a late run at a Western Region Football League division 1 finals spot.

The Vikings are level on points with shaky fifth seed Hoppers Crossing, with the two sides seeming to be heading in opposite directions.

The in-form Vikings have won four of their past five, while Hoppers Crossing has lost its past four.

Still, the odds are stacked against the Vikings, who will head into their final two matches, against Deer Park and
St Albans, as underdogs.

Hoppers will have to play runaway ladder leader Deer Park, but it also faces bottom side Yarraville-Seddon and has a superior percentage.

You have to admire the never-say-die attitude of Altona.

The Vikings kept their season alive with a gutsy three-point win over Port Melbourne Colts on the road at Murphy Reserve on Saturday.

Spotswood and Werribee Centrals will fight it out for second spot in a penultimate-round showdown at McLean Reserve this Saturday. The Woodsmen worked hard to negotiate a 28-point win over Hoppers Crossing on the road on Saturday. Christian Elliott (four goals) and David Iaccarino were outstanding for the winners.

In division 3, Scott Bell snared seven goals as the Laverton Magpies sealed a finals berth with 41-point win over North Sunshine.
