Premier Cricket: Footscray Edgewater start title defence with 1000th game

Footscray Edgewater will unfurl its first XI premiership flag from last summer during the lunch break of this season’s opening one-day match against Casey-South Melbourne in Victorian Premier Cricket on Saturday.

The match at Merv Hughes Oval will coincide with the Bulldogs’ 1000th game, making it one of the biggest days in the club’s history.

The Bulldogs took out their second top-flight premiership when they beat Essendon in a canter by 360 runs in March.

All will be spoken about glowingly by the Bulldogs faithful at a special buffet dinner on Saturday night.

There’s a lot to look forward to this season, too, with the bulk of the premiership side sticking around.

The Dogs have bolstered their batting stocks with the acquisition of James Crosthwaite, who scored 811 runs at 45 for Geelong last season to be ranked fourth on the competition’s runs list.

Premiership coach Steve Chapman remains at the helm.

The Bulldogs have made up special playing and social polo shirts to commemorate their 1000th match.

The tops will have the name and cap number of every single first XI player in the club’s history.

They will also include milestones and individual honours that have been celebrated along the journey since 1884.

In the VSDCA, Williamstown will open its campaign with a two-day home match against Balwyn at Morris Street.

Altona, the highest-ranked local club last summer, faces Preston away, while Yarraville has a trip to Plenty Valley.

In VTCA, Yarraville Club will have to wait two more weeks to fly their senior division premiership flag, as they’re away at South Caulfield for a two-day opener.

In north division, Spotswood and Altona North will rekindle their old rivalry.
