Altona athlete brings home junior national title

Local boy Matthew Hussey has made it two 3000m Australian junior titles in a row.

Competing at the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships in Perth, the Altona athlete won the under-16 boys title in a time of 9:00.14.

While the early laps were ran at a good consistent pace, the tempo picked up with four laps to go, but it was with 400m to go that it developed into a race in four between two Victorians, a Queenslander and a South Australian.

As the paced quickened 300m out from the finish line, Hussey hit the front and kicked for home winning with a final lap of 62 seconds.

Returning to little athletics competition last weekend, Hussey won gold in the state 1500m titles and silver in the 800m.

As the summer track season draws to a close, the young athlete now sets his sights on the cross country season, where he has enjoyed a great deal of success in past seasons.

He has the potential to set a unique record of winning the little athletics cross country championships each year since he started.

Altona Little Athletics Centre, which focuses on family, fun and fitness, is always on the look out for new little athletes.
