Altona returned to form at the right time, to knock off local Hobsons Bay rival Williamstown in the final round before Christmas in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west.
The A’s had dropped off in the last couple of weeks, while the Seagulls had started to find some form with a number of good wins.
But on Saturday it was the A’s that came out on top.
Altona won the toss and sent the Seagulls.
The Seagulls were quickly in trouble at 2-7 before they settled and pushed the score to 3-151.
As the Seagulls pushed for late runs the wickets started to fall.
The Seagulls made 7-189 from their 45 overs. Jack Craig top scored with 68.
Opening bowlers Charlie Ward and Callum Hands took three wickets each for the A’s.
Altona got off to a slow start with the bat, losing two early wickets.
The middle order stood up and pushed the side into a position where victory was in sight.
Two late wickets gave the Seagulls some hope, but the A’s got home with four balls remaining.
The A’s finished 6-191.
Skipper James Grubb was the star in the middle order with 76 not out.
Fraser Hay was the only multiple wicket taker for the Seagulls with two wickets.
The result has the teams equal on points heading into the Christmas break. The Seagulls sit in second position and Altona in third spot.
Spotswood sits on top of the ladder, with seven wins from its first nine games.
On Saturday, the Woodsmen accounted for Balwyn.
Balwyn was quickly in trouble at 3-39 before the middle order showed some resistance.
Wickets started to fall later in the innings with Balwyn making 9-187.
Jackson Wadden was the pick of the bowlers for the Woodmen with 4-32.
The Woodsmen lost an early wicket in the run chase, but were able to start to put together some partnership.
Most of the middle order got starts, but it came down to the tail to get them over the line.
The Woodsmen got the runs finishing 8-188 with 13 balls remaining.
Taylor Tatterson got 47 at the top of the order, while playing coach Dan Schuppan chipped in for 45 coming in number eight.
Yarraville has work to do in the second half of the season, sitting in 14th heading into the break.
On Saturday, the Eagles lost a high scoring match against Croydon.
The Eagles made 4-255 from their overs with Aidan Salvado making 104 not out off 118 balls.
Croydon needed the whole 45 overs to chase the target down.
Having already won one match on the final ball, the Eagles weren’t able to do it a second time.
Croydon finished 8-258.
