Altona City handed out a Saturday night smacking to Geelong Rangers in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2, winning 4-1 at Kim Reserve.
City entered the game knowing it had to win to keep hold of top spot and left nothing to chance with a dominant display.
Captain Matthew Gray and striker Ayodeji Omoboye both fired in doubles for City. With 11 goals to his name, Omoboye moved into equal second on the league’s golden boot chart with teammate Marcus Sherif.
The City duo are eight goals behind Corio star Vedran Stojanovic (19 goals), so it’s likely to be an in-house battle to finish second in the individual honour.
City can strengthen their title bid when they face rivals Hoppers Crossing on the road at Grange Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
The two sides are equal on points, with City’s superior goal difference the point of separation.
In men’s state league 1, top side Altona Magic took care of business with a 2-0 win over Yarraville Glory at McIvor Reserve on Saturday.
Ben Clarke and Jon McShane scored goals to secure the victory for the Magic.
While the Magic is eight points clear at the top, Yarraville’s inconsistent form has seen it dragged into the relegation zone.

In women’s state league 2, Maribyrnong Swifts were too good for Templestowe United, winning 3-0 at Johnson Reserve. Minna Syvanen and Aliantha Vandermey scored for the Swifts with an own goal thrown in.
Maidstone United secured a share of the points in a 2-2 draw with Fitzroy City after goals to Linda Marchetti and Effie Noulas, while a goal to Sabina Ganic earned Yarraville Glory a 1-1 draw with Melbourne University at Princes Park.
