Altona Magic feels pain of defeat for first time

Altona Magic has finally met its match.

The Magic was beaten for the first time this season – 2-1 by North Sunshine Eagles – in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Paisley Park on Saturday.

Jon McShane found the back of the net for the Magic to take his goal tally to eight in 10 games, but it was not enough, the Eagles scoring once in each half to walk away with all three points.

The Magic remain on track for the title, sitting four points clear on top of the ladder, with Preston Lions in second.

Altona East Phoenix managed a gutsy 2-2 draw on its trip to Cairnlea.

Altona still has plenty of work to do to get out of the bottom two, but a point at a notoriously difficult away venue is a step in the right direction.

Yarraville Glory sunk to a 2-1 defeat to Sydenham Park.

The Glory remains sixth on the ladder.

In state league 2, Altona City claimed all three points in a 2-1 win over Fitzroy City on the road at Fairfield Park.

Fourth-last is not the position Altona wants to be at this stage of the campaign, but it will gleefully accept the seven-point breathing space it has on the relegation zone.

Williamstown played out a 1-1 draw with Whittlesea United in a heavyweight state league 3 tussle at Harvest Home Reserve.

Alex Vlassis scored Williamstown’s goal late to secure a valuable point for his side, which is sitting in second spot on the ladder.

Melbourne City and Darebin United also had to settle for a share of the points after a 2-2 draw at Edwards Reserve.

In state league 4, Altona North suffered a huge 5-0 loss to Sebastopol Vikings; Maribyrnong Greens were edged out 3-2 by Melton Phoenix.

Laverton Park was hammered 5-0 by Kyneton District in state league 5.

In the women’s leagues on Sunday, Yarraville Glory got the better of Essendon Royals 2-1 in the state league 2 at McIvor Reserve after goals to Kathryn Floros and Sarah Lovett.

The Glory is third on the ladder and in the promotion hunt.

In state league 3, Amanda Kezovska scored twice in Maidstone United’s 4-1 win over Keilor Park.

That result keeps ladder leader United three points clear of Maribyrnong Swifts, who thrashed Yarraville Glory 7-0 after a hat-trick to Matilda Myers and a double to Belinda Huynh.
