Altona North snags a point on the road

Altona North obtained a valuable point from a difficult away trip to Truganina Hornets in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west at Arndell Park Reserve on Saturday.

North made the most of its early pressure to take the lead through Tony Saric, but the joy was short-lived.

The Hornets hit back with a goal
10 minutes later through Abdullahi Salad and the teams went into the half-time break locked at one apiece.

In the second half, Truganina went down to 10 men after captain Federico Rossini was given a red card, but Altona North could not make its numerical advantage count.

North is undefeated with two wins and three draws after five rounds.

It will host Laverton at Duane Reserve on Saturday.

Laverton downed Surf Coast 2-1 on the back of goals to Daniel Taylor and Alejandro Martinez.

Melbourne City claimed its first win of the campaign, beating Balmoral 2-0.

In state league 1, Altona City had a third draw in four games, this time a 1-1 game with Geelong.

Yarraville Glory was on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline against Keilor Park and remains stuck at the foot of the ladder.

In state league 2, Altona East Phoenix snapped out of its funk with a 3-0 thrashing of Fitzroy City.

In state league 3, Williamstown’s two-game win streak came to an end at the hands of Sunbury United.

The Blues went down 3-1 after Sunbury’s Jayden Mercieca scored a hat-trick.

In state league 5, Maidstone United was no match for high flying Gisborne, beaten 3-1, while Maribyrnong Greens were rolled 2-1 by Melbourne Lions.

In women’s state league 2, Maidstone United came back from two goals down at half-time to upend Yarra Jets 3-2.

Jacquelene Ghirxi was the star for United with a hat-trick.

Maribyrnong Swifts played out a pulsating 3-3 draw with La Trobe University.

In women’s state league 3, Altona Magic annihilated Gisborne 7-0 and Altona City was crushed 13-0 by Hume CIty.

In NPL 2, west leaders Altona Magic further enhanced its title contending status with a 3-1 victory over east leaders Dandenong City in inter-league play at Frank Holohan Soccer Complex on Friday night.
