A-League

Western United will once again bring elite men’s and women’s soccer to Tasmania, touring the Apple Isle for the fourth time in the A-League. John Aloisi’s men’s side will face Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday, January 27 and Sydney FC on Saturday, February 3. The women’s squad will also be in Tasmania on the first Saturday of February as Kat Smith leads her side into a first-ever showdown against Central Coast Mariners.

VFL

Williamstown has announced the signing of Akol Deng ahead of the 2024 Victorian Football League season. Deng is an athletic ruckman with a professional basketball background and was Werribee VFL listed last season. He was also awarded Yarraville Seddon Eagles’ best and fairest last season. Deng displays great strength and intensity on the football field. The Towners have also signed Mia Giannopoulos to their women’s program. Giannopoulos was formerly with Darebin Falcons VFLW in 2023, she is an elite runner with serious speed and skill.

VTCA

Williamstown CYMS got a win to start its Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 competition. Facing Seabrook, the CYs made 158 as it was bowled out with one ball remaining. Lasanga Guruge top scored with 37 Daniel Kilfoy three wickets for Searbook Seabrook finished 7-123 in reply. Kamaljeet Singh top scored with 36 at the top of the order. The winner of CYs and Bellbridge, which is set to be played this week, will go through to the finals.

Premier Cricket

A second straight Dylan Brasher century guided Footscray to victory against the Greenvale Kangaroos in Victorian Premier Cricket. Brasher (112) and Aiman Nadeem (116) put on 220 for the first wicket to help the Bulldogs to 5-297. They then bowled the Kangaroos out for 154. Max Birthsel took 4-38 to be the pick of the bowlers. The Bulldogs now sit 10th on the ladder, five points outside the top eight.
