A former Western Region Football League premiership coach will lead West Footscray next season.

The Roosters announced last week that Troy Beamond had been appointed coach for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Beamond comes to the Roosters after coaching at a number of levels. He had a stint with Werribee in the Victorian Football League and Springbank.

Rooster fans will know him from his time at Wyndhamvale.

He coached the Falcons to a division 2 premiership in 2015 beating the Roosters in the grand final.

He was named the league senior coach of the season and took the side into division 1 the following season.

He stepped away coaching the Falcons to focus on his health after being diagnosed with Bell’s palsy.

“Troy comes to us with a proven record — promoting a culture of success, professionalism and youth development — his coaching experience will be an asset to the club as a whole,” the club said on social media.

“This is great news for the future of West Footscray Football Club as we move into an exciting period of footy that will see our strong junior program graduate into senior football.

“Stay tuned for more news over the coming weeks.”

Beamond replaces Ian Fox who took on coaching the side six weeks out from the start of the 2021 season.

The Roosters haven’t won a game in that time, only avoiding relegation last year due to COVID-19.

They are set for the drop to division 3 for next season, with the side sitting last.

On Saturday, the Roosters were no match for Newport.

Newport, which is one of several teams fighting for a finals spot, dominated from start to finish, winning 26.24 (180)-0.2 (2).

Joshua Barker, Kane Liossis and Ethan Murphy were the Roosters best.

The win and other results sees Newport move into fourth spot.

They are a game clear of Albion and Wyndhamvale, while Glen Orden is another game back.

On Saturday, Albion lost a thriller to Parkside, 10.12 (72)-12.3 (75).

The Cats had led by three points at the final break, but kicked 2.9 in the final quarter to Parkside’s 4.3

Wyndhamvale’s finals hopes took a hit against the undefeated Point Cook Centrals. Centrals led throughout the 11.21 (87)-7.10 (52) win.

In other results, North Footscray beat Glen Orden, 13.7 (85)-11.5 (71).

The win keeps North Footscray in third spot and clear of the chasing pack.
