Seddon opening batsman Ben Speake has produced an innings for the ages in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west grand final.
Speake batted for the whole two days, was at the crease for 160 overs and compiled a remarkable 204 not out to put the Dockers in the box seat with 6-374 against a shell-shocked Sunshine United at Laverton Park.
Speake’s temperament was patient, but there were moments of indulgence – 23 fours, a six and two bat raises to the pavilion being the highlights of the knock so far.
The former Doutta Stars player showed his ability with a century in his third start for Seddon, but his form had been patchy leading into the grand final.
Speake left his best until last, producing an innings that will be enshrined in Seddon lore, particularly if his side can wrap up victory, which it is hot favourite to do with two days to go.
Speake’s massive contribution was joined by contributions from Duleeka Thisakuttige (63) and captain John Taylor (56), who were crucial in allowing Speake to bloom.
In the north-west B1 grand final, West Newport will chase an outright result after losing on first innings to Royal Park-Brunswick at the Western Oval.
Wests could only muster 175 in the first innings and the Royals are 7-187, a lead of 12.
In west A1, Williamstown Imperials have a fight on their hands in their grand final bout with Seabrook at Saltwater Reserve.
The Imperials are 4-77 in reply to Seabrook’s 231.
