New Williamstown women’s coach Liam Cavanagh is hoping to have his side playing an attacking brand of football next year.
The Victorian Football League club last week announced that Cavanagh had been appointed coach, replacing Penny Cula-Reid, who stepped down from the role.
Cavanagh joins the club from Coburg, where he was the club’s inaugural women’s coach, taking them to a grand final this year in the South Eastern Women’s competition.
He said he told the club website he was excited to take on the role.
“I have no doubt there is a journey and as much as I am ambitious I am realistic,” he said.
“There’s milestones we need to reach first before we consider ourselves premiership contenders and a lot of hard work in realising this.
“I’ve had a different pathway to most people, to summarise it quickly, it means there is no shortcut and no substitute for hard work.
“For me I try and imprint that in the way I coach and putting as much effort in as possible.”
Cavanagh said he wants to play an attacking brand of football in 2023 and believes a lot of the team’s energy and culture can be shaped by the way they go about their footy.
The side finished with two wins in 2023.
“I think coming in with a game plan of how footy should be played is one thing, but I always keep in mind that footy is supposed to be enjoyable, people sacrifice time out of their lives to play it,” he said.
“We want to move the ball fast, we want to kick goals, we want to celebrate, we want to do all those things.”
Seagulls’ chief executive Ashley Baker said Cavanagh was a standout candidate in a very competitive and thorough recruitment process.
