The City West Falcons bounced back in a big way in the Victorian Netball League championship division on Wednesday night.
After a below par start to the season, the Falcons smashed Casey, 89-51.
Falcons coach Marg Lind said she was thrilled how the side had been able to regroup.
“It was a lot better,” she said. “The first quarter we scored nearly 30 goals.
“We were able to address a few communication issues in the defensive end and it was a good result.
“The girls were trying to score 90 goals, but just missed out. I’m pretty happy.”
Lind was full of praise for Montana Holmes.
Holmes played wing attack on Wednesday night. Since losing Maggie Lind and Emma Walters from last season’s squad, the Falcons have struggled in that part of the court.
“Soli [Ropati] has not felt comfortable there,” she said.
“Montana showed a lot of courage to step up and play not in her normal position. It was a huge step forward for someone to put her hand, it’s a big credit as a player.
“It shows she’s thinking about the team first, not the individual which is something we had been emphasising.
“Putting our differences aside.”
Lind said Jane Cook was good in her return from COVID-19, but could only manage playing a half.
Sarah Szczykulski was also good in defence.
The club’s division 1 side also opened up its account against the Demons.
The team won 50-23. Lind said some of the newer players who had not played VNL before, were starting to look at home.
She said they were starting to see a bit of growth.
The under-19s started off poorly and were made to pay. The Falcons lost 52-41.
Lind said they deserved to lose, as they weren’t focused to start the game.
The Falcons next week face the Hawks.
