Maribyrnong Greens are the new front-runners of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west after a 4-3 win over Point Cook in the top-of-the-table bout at Skinner Reserve on Saturday.

The Greens came back from the dead, overcoming a 3-1 deficit early in the second half with three unanswered goals.

One point clear on top of the standings, the Greens travel to Sebastopol on Saturday for another tough encounter against a promotion-hunting side.

Altona North grabbed its third win of a frustrating season with a narrow 1-0 home victory over Surf Coast at Duane Reserve.

North went into the game encouraged by its draw with Melton the previous week and were on the front foot from the start.

But it took until midway through the first half to make the ascendancy count, with Adam Whatmore grabbing the opening goal, slotting home the rebound after his initial effort was saved.

North didn’t convert further chances to take the lead but were grateful when the post prevented an equalizer just before half-time.

The second half was an end-to-end battle, with Surf Coast seeking an equaliser and North looking for a vital second goal to kill the game.

Despite chances at both ends, there were no further scores and North came away with the vital three points. They will face Keilor Wolves away on Saturday in a six-pointer near the foot of the table.

Melbourne City was at its attacking best in a 4-1 win over Laverton Park at Edwards Reserve.

Jean Cardonne scored a double for City, while Juan Pablo Raad and Javier Martinez also found the back of the net. City moved into third spot, just two points off the summit.

In state league 1, Altona Magic was edged out, 1-0 away, to Western Suburbs, missing a chance to close the gap on ladder-leader North Sunshine, its game postponed. Altona East Phoenix jumped up to fourth with a 5-1 crushing of Cairnlea.

In state league 2, Yarraville Glory blanked Essendon Royals to win 3-0 and keep hold of second. The Glory’s goals came through Goran Jozeljic, Darcey den Ouden and Billy Mitanidis.

In state league 3, Altona City beat North City Wolves 2-0 while Williamstown was pipped 4-3 by La Trobe University in a seven-goal thriller.
