Final heartbreak for Newport-Digman and Gellibrand

It was grand final heartbreak for Newport-Digman and Gellibrand in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, but Williamstown Congs kept their season alive.

All three teams played the first two games of the best-of-three grand final series on the weekend, with the division 2 and division 4 premierships among those decided after the first two games.

In division 2, Newport Digman lost to Sydenham-Hillside.

In game one, the Bulls were bowled out for 145 on the final ball of the innings.

Tyler Johnston top scored with 44.

The Storm finished 2-148.

Andrew Tee and Shannon Evans were the wicket takers.

The Gorillas were restricted to 9-132 from their overs

Matthew Shiell and James Muirhead top scored with 28 apiece.

The Storm didn’t lose a wicket, as they made 0-133 in 33.2 overs to seal the win and premiership.

In division 4, Gellibrand was stunned by Caroline Springs.

In game one, the Falcons made 6-195 with contributions throughout the batting order.

At 5-80 the Falcons were in control, but Gellibrand was able to respond. Gellibrand fell just short, restricted to 8-192.

Jacob McDonald top scored with 76.

In game two, Gellibrand batted first and made 9-182 after being sent in.

James Ryan top scored with 74 at the top of the order.

The Falcons got early wickets, before McDonald got away from them late to push up the total.

The Falcons started well before losing clumps of wickets and were in trouble heading into the final overs of the game.

They were able to find a way to make 8-184 with three balls remaining to seal the premiership.

In division 5, Williamstown Congs will be aiming for premiership joy on Saturday against Roxburgh Park.

In game one, the Congs made 7-140 from their 40 overs.

Jason Green top scored with 30.

Roxburgh Park made the runs with 10 balls remaining.

The Falcons finished 5-143. Abdul Bari Khan Khalil top scored with 34.

Gurjit Singh and Antarpreet Singh Bajwa took two wickets each.

In game two, the Congs made 9-167 from their 40 overs.

Karandeep Singh top scored with 44.

The game went down to the wire, with the Falcons falling just short, bowled out for 160 with three balls remaining.

Karandeep Singh took three wickets.

In senior division, Aberfeldie and Haig-Fawkner are locked at 1-1 after the first weekend.

Deer Park claimed the division 1 premiership against St Francis de Sales, while Grand United and Footscray United are locked at 1-1 in division 3.
