First up loss for Footscray

Footscray will need a jump-start after stalling out of the blocks in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league.

The Bulldogs, still rusty after a round one bye, went down 3-1 to a Camberwell side already at the top of its game at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday.

It was a closely-fought first half with the sides locked at 1-1 at half-time, but Camberwell ran the game out better with two second half goals sealing victory for the away side.

Nic Lewis was Footscray’s lone goal-scorer.

The Bulldogs will meet Yarra Valley tonight at the Maribyrnong Secondary College at 8.30pm in the final game before the Easter break.

Altona, first round winners, met their match in a 3-1 loss to Doncaster at the Doncaster Regional Hockey Centre on Sunday. The Seagulls conceded two first half goals to trail 2-0 at half-time.

Altona and Melbourne University – two sides with a 1-1 record – will square off tonight at the State Netball and Hockey Centre at 8.45pm.

In women’s premier league, while some clubs have completed two games, a frustrated Footscray was still yet to take to the field after the weekend. The Bulldogs had the bye in round one and their most recent game against Camberwell was washed out by the ferocious storms that hit Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. The two sides shared a point each.

Altona is yet to taste victory after two games. The Seagulls could not improve on their first round draw, going down 4-0 to Doncaster at the Doncaster Regional Hockey Centre on Saturday.

Altona will face Melbourne University at the State Netball and Hockey Centre tonight at 8.30pm.
