Footscray Lacrosse Club stars will occupy almost a third of the spots on the Australian women’s national team travelling to England in July for the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup.
The Bulldogs’ “super six” – Abbie Burgess, Verity Clough, Stella Justice-Allen, Sarah Mollison, Theodora Kwas and Rebecca Lane – will pit their talents against the world’s best, having the ultimate honour of donning the green and gold.
To have such high representation from one club is an incredible feat … Footscray president Tim Lane said the players will be a credit to their local community.
“We wish the players all the best for the World Cup, and in the lead-up, we really hope that the local community gets behind our players as they start preparing,” Lane said.
“I know that all of the Footscray women will represent the Maribyrnong community – Footscray Lacrosse Club, Lacrosse Victoria and the Australia Lacrosse Association – with the highest level of integrity.
“This is a great moment for these players.”
In all, there will be 10 western suburbs-linked players in the team.
Four players from Newport – Bree Hussey, Rachel Kirchheimer, Hayley Sofarnos and Stephanie McNamara – will be jetting off to Europe, alongside the Footscray six.
Following the World Cup, the team will travel to Poland to compete at the 2017 International World Games.
