Gators hungry for success

Altona Gators are hungry for success in the Big V women’s division 2 competition.

After sitting on top of the ladder in their first season back, the Gators didn’t get the chance to test themselves against the best in the finals due to the season ending early due to COVID.

And with Sherbrooke Suns, who finished below them on the ladder, being promoted, it’s a case of what might have been.

Gators coach Cameron Wilkosz said they were keen to continue on with what they did last season, their first year back having a women’s side.

“Disappointing, is one adjective,” he said of not having a chance to play finals and get promoted.

“We were really confident we could win the whole thing. Sherbrooke was promoted, even though we were above them on the ladder.

“We are so much more hungry and we want to win. Division 2 is not where Altona should be.”

Several players from last season’s team have returned, as the Gators continue to focus on local talent.

Wilkosz said they needed to continue to help provide pathways for the younger players.

“We’ve had an influx of players, with a couple of new players and a few returning players.

“Most of the kids live in Altona and have played youth league for the club. There’s a lot of talent in the Altona area.

“When Randy Shanklin was away, I coached the under-18s for a month and it was good to know more about them.

“A few have now started to training with us.”

One of the home grown players is Jess Rarity, who is captain this season. Last season she combined playing youth league and senior divisions.

“She’s played with us since she was 11,” Wilkosz said. “She’s a do as I do sort of captain and leads by example.

“Reyhan Aziz won our most valuable player award last season.”

Sharna Appleby is another player Wilkosz is looking forward to seeing more of on the court after breaking her hand last season.

The Gators started off in fine form with a close win against Coburg Giants, which has several players who have played at the higher level.

The Gators face Collingwood on Sunday.
