Jacana grabs a smashing victory

Jacana broke through for its first win of the Essendon District Football League division 2 season by thumping Keilor Park.

After a tough start to the season, the Jaguars finally found some form against the struggling Devils.

It was all one-way traffic, with the Jaguars putting a score on the board early and leading by 48 points at quarter-time.

It was a sign of things to come, with the Jaguars eventually winning 28.11 (179)-3.5 (23).

Jacana coach Matthew Huy said there was one big difference between the weekend’s match and earlier two losses.

“It was very good for the boys to get the win,” he said.

“The first couple of games we had good moments, but couldn’t do it for four quarters.

“Burnside Heights played really well and executed their game plan. “Against Coburg Districts, I thought we were better for three quarters, but gave up in the last quarter.

“This week the boys played as a team for four quarters and it made a difference.”

Huy said the team effort was reflected on the scoreboard.

Cameron Cloke had a day out in front of goal, kicking 10, while Cooper McPharlane kicked five goals.

“The way we moved the ball made it a lot easier for our forwards,” Huy said.

“Our forwards kicked 21 goals … which was a fantastic achievement for everyone down the ground who had got the ball into them.”

Huy was quick to praise Keilor Park for the way it played and never gave up.

Craig Poynter and Kane Murfett were named the Jaguars’ best, while Bryce Kimuliatis was awarded the Anzac Day medal chosen by Devils coach John Mangos.

The Jaguars will this week face Moonee Valley, which is yet to win a match.

Huy said they were hopeful that the win would be the start of something this season.

“The boys know they have to do as a team and have to bring it week in, week out,” he said.

“Hopefully we can get some wins on the board and possibly make finals.”

In premier division, Greenvale remains undefeated.

The Jets beat Essendon Doutta Stars 14.6 (90)-8.13 (61).

Jacob Thompson continued his good form for the Jets, kicking four goals, while Nat Caruso was named their best.

The Jets are one of three undefeated teams, along with Aberfeldie and Keilor. The Jets will play the Gorillas this week.

In division 1, Westmeadows took home the points on Anzac Day, beating Oak Park 20.17 (137)-9.5 (59).

Omar Saad kicked seven goals for the winners.

Roxburgh Park put in its best performance of the season, but ran out of legs against Hillside.

The Magpies were in the game until three-quarter time, but didn’t kick a goal in the final quarter, eventually losing 14.11 (95)-5.9 (39).

Travis Cooke was named the Magpies’ best.

Craigieburn got its second win of the season by beating Taylors Lakes.

The Eagles set the win up in the first quarter, building on their lead throughout the game for a 19.6 (120)-13.10 (88) win.

Tullamarine returned to the winners’ list, beating West Coburg, 18.10 (118)-7.8 (50).
