‘Large club of the year’ award to Footscray City Gymnastics Club

Footscray City Gymnastics Club has collected back-to-back honours in taking out Gymnastic Victoria’s “large club of the year” award for a second year running.

Based in West Footscray, the club has more than 1100 members and 40 dedicated coaches.

Coaching, programming and events co-ordinator Jes Larsen said the win is especially gratifying given the club’s focus is on inclusion, rather than on elite performance.

“It is a peer recognition vote, and it’s really special because we are a community-based club offering mainly recreational gymnastics.”

Footscray City was also a finalist in the awards for inclusive initiative of the year and coaching team-coach of the year.

Ms Larsen said the club’s classes have been created to cater for junior age groups right through to seniors.

Footscray City’s motto is “skills for life” and the club encourages everyone to give it a go and stay involved at whatever level best suits them.

Programs cater for beginners, recreational gymnasts and competition athletes.

Ms Larsen said many of the gymnasts are local, but others travel from across other parts of Melbourne to take part.

Footscray City Gymnastics Club will be holding an open day, 12.30-4.30pm, next Monday, March 13.
