Lift-off at last for Rosamond Rockets

Rosamond has moved up from the bottom of the Bowls Victoria division 2 ladder thanks to a 14-shot thrashing of Hoppers Crossing at Rosamond Road on Saturday.

The Rockets consigned the visitors to the cellar after dominating the clash of the battling sides in a 83-69 victory, the hosts claiming three of the four rinks on the day.

Rockets skip Michael Stelluto said his side was “starting to feel the mojo” two wins from the last two outings on home soil.

The importance of victories at home is not lost on the Rockets.

Their previous win in friendly confines was over top side Richmond Union.

If they want to avoid relegation, they must keep the win streak alive at home and steal some victories on the road.

“You need to win all of your home matches,” Stelluto said. “That’s the basics – you’ve got to start with that.

“You get an advantage by knowing your conditions – things like the wind and your green type – so you’ve got to make the most of it.”

The Rocket rinks skippered by Stelluto and Alex McMurdo had comfortable wins.

The most exciting finish was that of Rob Ward’s rink, which fought back from seven shots down with five ends to go to pick up two bonus points.

“Their focus was basically to make sure we won the overall – but as it panned out they picked up a four on the last end to win it by one,” Stelluto said. “That was a really big bonus for us.

“We been in a position previously where we’ve missed out on finals by one point so every point counts.”

The Rockets will host finals contender Flemington-Kensington at home on Saturday.

With fond memories of past clashes with the fourth-placed club, it is not a match-up the Rockets fear despite their vastly different positions on the ladder.

“In the past we’ve gone pretty well against them when we’ve played them at home,” Stelluto said.

“We saved ourselves from relegation two years ago when they were sitting second and we were sitting second last. We’re looking forward to giving them a go.”

In premier division, Yarraville-Footscray continued on its merry way with a 78-76 win over MCC Kew Sports to retain fourth spot.

Altona snapped its four-game losing streak with a 92-66 pummelling of Mitcham.
