Magpies lock in women’s coach

Watching his daughter play football made new Laverton women’s coach Steve Kewish want to get involved in the female game.

Having long been involved in the game, Kewish makes the move into coaching female football with the Western Region Football League club.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“I was a junior football coach at a young age as I had a serious leg injury which stopped me from playing.

“I was also a mad darts player, so I gave up footy to play darts for a period. My son and step son were both playing and I got back involved at the club they were at.

“A mate asked if I was interested in coaching at Laverton and it steamrolled from there.”

While he is new to women’s football, Kemish is keen to get to work and help the playing group develop.

The side started pre-season training on Monday, before many of the men’s sides across the competition.

“I don’t have any expectations,” he said. “I’ll be looking to teach the girls as well as I can.

“I believe they really didn’t have much of a game plan last season with one of the players having to step up and coach.

“It will be a learning process for me and the girls and I’ll take everything on board.”

Kemish said there had been plenty of good feedback from the existing playing group who were all looking forward to getting started.

He said anyone interested in joining the club was more than welcome as they aim to grow the program.

“My daughter has been at Werribee Centrals and I’ve watched a fair bit of girls football,” he said.

“It helped me like the idea of working with a fantastic bunch of women and trying to teach them how football is played.

“It’s more than just running out on the field on game day. It’s about having fun and enjoyment.

“A lot of girls can kick a footy these days, we want to see as many of them as possible coming down to play.”

Meanwhile, the Magpies have announced a number of re-signings for their men’s program.

Soni Rainbow returns to the club having most recently played with St Kilda City.

Jordan Viojo Rainbow, Matt Grigg, Dejan Samoukovic and Adam Calsey-Old have all recommitted for next season.
