Cricket in the west produced a mixed bag of results over the weekend, with many teams being washed out and unable to play.

Footscray’s first XI were unable to play their Victorian Premier Cricket round 10 match against Melbourne University due to wet weather, but the second XI did take to the pitch and were able to bring home a win.

Footscray made 9-244 with opener Nathan Caulfield scoring 42 with four fours. Abhishek Beniwal managed to produce 56 with four fours and one six.

Malith Cooray, Harry Tonks and Jay Vine were the best of the bowlers with two wickets each.

The team currently sits in fifth place on the ladder, with six wins and three losses.

Over in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, Spotswood’s second XI was also the only side from the club to get on the ground.

They defeated Melton, making 115, with Jagger Skilbeck the best batsman and Jackson Wadden the best bowler.

Altona’s first XI did manage to take to the pitch, and produced a win over Elsternwick.

Elsternwick made 164 with Zachariah Grundmann-Perera producing 49 runs with an impressive seven fours and two sixes.

After losing an early wicket, Altona steadied and was sitting 1-66. The A’s lost two quick wickets, but got going and finished 4-168.

Skipper Adam Yates top scored with 64 not out.

Despite the win, it was only Altona’s second of the season. The team still sits towards the bottom of the ladder, with seven losses to their name.

Yarraville was defeated on home turf by Oakleigh, who made 6-171.

Opening batsman Aidan Salvado was the best of the bunch, making 19 runs, while bowler Matthew Grose took three wickets.
