Another sterling pitching effort from Jimmy Jenson has guided Newport to an important win over Moorabbin in Vic Summer League division 1 baseball.
The star pitcher threw the whole game for the Rams on Sunday.
Despite giving up two runs early, he was instrumental in Newport claiming a 10-3 win and that keeps the team second in its conference.
Senior assistant coach Dean Anglin said Jenson’s effort was appreciated by the Rams’ roster.
“He’s a workhorse and we love the work he does,” Anglin said.
“Jimmy just has absolute heart and wants to go out and compete at every opportunity – so we’re not going to hold him back.”
Jenson threw 126 pitches across the match, but while it took 26 pitches to get out of the first, he got better as the match wore on, with his final three innings amounting to just 25 pitches.
On the offensive side, Newport got on the scoreboard via a three-run home run from Matt Lawman in the second, starting a trend of strong hitting throughout the day.
The Rams hit five doubles as they consistently crossed the plate to control the contest and keep extending their lead.
“It was exactly how you want to play baseball,” Anglin said.
“You don’t want to rely on a big innings – you want a consistent effort across the day, and that’s what we got. Moorabbin have been heading up the other conference – a lot of teams in our conference haven’t been able to get wins against them.
“The win puts us in a strong position and really solidifies our strong start to the year.”
Sunday marked the start of a busy stretch of five games in three weeks for the Rams, with every win important to ensure they hold on to a top-two place in their conference.
“It’s a tough stretch for us, but we’re in pretty good shape,” Anglin said.
“With Jimmy pitching a full game, it means we’ve got all the rest of our pitching up our sleeve for the rest of the week.
“His efforts not only helped us win this game but will give us a better shot in others, as well.”
