Yarraville Seddon has received a massive boost with AFL premiership player Travis Varcoe committing to the club for next year’s Western Region Football League division 1 season.
The Eagles announced on Thursday that Varcoe would join the club next season in a playing capacity.
Varcoe, a two-time premiership player, played 230 games with Geelong and Collingwood.
Eagles coach Brad Julier said they had been speaking with Varcoe for a couple of years.
“It’s pretty big for us,” he said. “We’ve been in contact for the last couple of years as he lives locally.
“He’s played a couple of games in Darwin the last couple of weeks and he’s got the bug back to play.
“We spoke to him before he want to Darwin and he said let me see how I go in Darwin
“He came to us and we were keen to get him on board.”
Julier said getting someone into the squad with that experience was massive for the club. Varcoe also works with the Western Bulldogs.
“He’s played under some great coaches,” he said. “The experiences that he can pass on will be fantastic.”
Juiler said Varcoe will have a big impact on and off the field. He said leadership would be the biggest factor.
“It’s a lot more about leadership for us,” he said. “ What he can do talent wise is a bonus.
“The direction he can provide, it will be like another coach out there.”
Outside of the signing of Varcoe, Juiler said things were going really well at the club. He said they were hoping to close the gap on the top sides.
“We’ve got some young juniors back to the club,” he said. “There’s a couple of other guys we’re looking at adding.
“We’re in great shape so far. With a full year of development in division one, hopefully we can take the next step.”
