Williamstown CYMS will seriously beef up its coaching prowess this season to maximise its competitive advantage.

The CYs senior side will be boosted by coaches across all lines, including a bench coach and senior coach Matt Montebello, ensuring no stone is left unturned in their bid to reach Victorian Amateur Football Association’s Premier C finals.

“It’s trying to surround the footy club and the boys with as many people as possible,” Montebello told Star Weekly. “We don’t have the resources of a VFL club, but the more people we have with strong footy knowledge to be around this really young side, the more opportunity we can give to these kids.

“We’re trying to set them up with some standards and a lot of feedback to help them improve.”

CYs has become an attractive destination for footballers keen on going to the next level. The club has close ties with Williamstown Seagulls through its Football Williamstown partnership, and now has four players on the VFL premiers’ list.

“You do as much as you can to develop the kids and give them as much opportunity,” Montebello said. “We’ve gone from having no listed players at Williamstown to four. I don’t think we’ll see Tom Johnstone or Nick Ebinger at all this year, while Ash Heaver and Ben Deller will be with us for the next few weeks.

“It’s a great thing to have, knowing we can develop our kids and especially the kids that the [junior pathway] system overlooked.

“We’re proud … we’ve been able to give them opportunities in a unique way.”
