Williamstown is licking its wounds after going down to western suburbs rivals Werribee by 41 points in the Victorian Football League at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday.
The Seagulls were competitive early in the first quarter and for most of the second term, but were bereft of any four quarter contributors.
The opening term was played at a breakneck speed with little to separate the sides for the first 15 minutes, but Werribee put the foot down late in the term to reel off four unanswered goals to lead by 37 points at quarter-time.
The second quarter was largely dictated by Williamstown and it got its rewards through a pair of goals to Lachie Schultz and one through Mitch Norton to cut the deficit back to 21.
Two goals in three minutes to Werribee’s Nick Nott and Andrew Hooper spoiled the Seagulls fightback.
Williamstown opened the third with goals to Jack Dorgan and Ben Cavarra to cut the margin to just 16, but that was as close as it would get.
Werribee rattled off five of the next six goals to restore a 37-point lead by three-quarter time, which effectively turned the last quarter into extended junk time.
Werribee got to take hold of the John Pyne Cup, played for annually when these two rivals meet, and celebrated its first win of the season.
The Seagulls will host another hungry stand-alone side in Frankston at the Williamstown Football Ground on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Footscray will head into its bye week with some work to do after losing for a second time in three games against Geelong Cats by 19 points on Saturday.
The Bulldogs were competitive most of the game, but faded in the final term.
Angus Monfries was superb for Footscray with four goals, while Andrew Panayi kicked two.
Will Hayes, Fletcher Roberts and Lewis Young were the other notable contributors for the Bulldogs.
